Chocolate orange shortcake with vanilla bean ice cream and strawberries
Chocolate Orange Shortcake
1 1/4 c all purpose flour
1/3 c cocoa powder
1/4 c sugar
1/2 t baking soda
1 1/4 t baking powder
zest of 1 orange
5 oz butter (10 Tablespoons)
1/2 c buttermilk
Combine all the dry ingredients (from flour to zest). Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles chocolate breadcrumbs. Make a well in the center and pour in the buttermilk.
With a fork, stir in the buttermilk until it forms a crumbly dough.
Pat the dough into a circle.
On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to a 1/3 inch thickness. Cut into desired shapes.
Bake at 425F for about 10 minutes (depending on size). The best way to know if they're done is to test one!
